Architecture Biennale 2010

The 12th Architecture Biennale threw open its doors on 29 August 2010 in Venice. The German contribution this year is devoted to "Longing". A celebration of the sensuality of architecture will be staged under this theme in the German Pavilion where an inspirational meeting place has been created – with furniture by Walter Knoll.

The Architecture Biennale in Venice is one of the world's most important exhibitions of architecture. Alternating with the Art Biennale, it takes place every two years in the 300 meter long shipyard hangars of the Arsenale and in the country pavilions in the Giardini della Biennale Park. Under the motto "People meet in Architecture", over 55 nations are presenting until 21 November 2010 current trends from architecture and urban design. The curator of the Biennale is Kazuyo Seijima, an architect from the famous SANAA practice in Tokyo and winner of the Pritzker prize in 2010.

The German Pavilion has been designed by the "Die Walverwandtschaften" architectural group which practices in Munich, Zurich and Boston. In the Red Salon, the main space of the Pavilion, sketches by a selection of German architects and creative artists will give expression to their architectural longing. With the walls covered with red textiles and featuring red Classic Edition 369 chairs from Walter Knoll, the Salon will invite visitors to reflect on the sensitivities of contemporary architecture.
