Reason becomes emotion: from a spur-of-the-moment sculpture to a sofa
The idea: in the beginning was a blanket or rather a two-dimensional swatch of fabric. In a matter of seconds, we created an object by turning and folding, a spur-of-the-moment sculpture.
A tribute to craftsmanship
The design and development process is more than just a quest for the most attractive form. A piece of furniture is defined by how a person sits in it, whether they feel comfortable and supported – and how the materials interact with the surrounding environment. The sense of creativity in each piece, particularly in the details. The selection of materials and how they are implemented. The structure of the upholstery. The new products represent meticulousness in the best possible sense, from the initial idea to the art of the finishing touches. The new products Tama Living, Joco and Oki are designs for a modern lifestyle – and the result of a genuine dedication to detail-oriented craftsmanship.
Walter Knoll produces furniture with select materials and that makes tough demands in terms of excellence, precision and creativity. Natural, exclusive fabrics, the very best leather, elegant woods, premium natural stone – the materials give the products an aura of the special. Walter Knoll has over 150 years of expertise in leatherwork. An experience that creates confidence.
Cutting leather is about craftsmanship and high-tech. Expert craftsmanship and the trained eye of a skilled workman combine with the technical performance of state-of-the-art leather cutters. Experienced and down to the very last detail, perfectly and precisely.
Clear seam patterns, precise seams in different constructions and exact piping determine the value of upholstered furniture from Walter Knoll. The basis of this is long years of experience working with fabrics and leather, an understanding of how best to combine the pieces, and extreme dexterity for the fine seams. Stich after stich. For absolute perfection.
An item of furniture – a masterpiece of craftsmanship. In Upholstery, the furniture is given its tailor-made suit – by traditional craftsmen, masters of their trade. Precision and physical strength, expert skills and long years of experience make upholstery craftsmanship an art form. A profession which Walter Knoll has been engaged in and passed on for generations.
In autumn 2016 Walter Knoll is presenting a range of new products – with the conference table Conference-X and the Leadchair Management, two further highlights in the well established collaboration with the Vienna-based design studio EOOS. But how does an idea become a well-thought-out and innovative product? That is something that is only possible when developers, designers and producers work together at the highest level – and know-how, experience and ambition join forces. A film about a very special collaboration.
Markus Benz in conversation with Ben van Berkel.
Together with Caroline Bos, Ben van Berkel founded the UNStudio in Amsterdam in 1998. The interdisciplinary design team develops urban projects, builds bridges and public buildings all over the world, as well as working on the design of products and media.
Ben van Berkel succeeds in transforming architecture to sculpture. His design is innovative. His artistic language makes use of the possibilities of computer-aided animation. His designs are eye-catching but at the same time respect historical structures as illustrated by the Erasmus bridge in Rotterdam, the new Mercedes- Benz Museum in Stuttgart and the urban concept for Genoa harbour.

EOOS develops its talents as a team. The Austrian designers Martin Bergmann, Gernot Bohmann and Harald Gründl actually recognised the special synergy of their talents during their studies at the College of Applied Art in Vienna where they all attended Paolo Piva’s design master class. In 1995, they founded a studio together and since then have constantly developed their own special methodology.

Tama Living – a sofa like a piece of classical music.
Our definition of a welcome home: the new Tama Living sofa range is an elegant new design created in cooperation with the Vienna-based design studio EOOS. A sofa that calls to mind a piece of classical music. A clearly symmetrical body set on elegant solid wood legs. Openings in the back rest and saddle leather trays that can be integrated into the seat add to the refined elegance of the composition. A subtle look for divine moments of absolute comfort.
